Locomotive Expeditions Tour 6days
Travel Style: Train Tours From Yangon
Itinerary: Yangon – Bago – Thaton – Kyaikhto- Bago – Yangon
In the course of time, steams locomotives are getting rare if not otherwise almost extinct in the world today. In Myanmar, about 40 steam locomotives are believed to be in service mostly on cargo routes. Main types are of YB, YC and YD. The rare ST series have been ceased operation for many years although a few of them are still preserved in good order. The meter gauge railways of Myanmar has always been influenced by Indian Railways and all the remaining active locos are post World War II examples. The mending work Insein, a suburb of Yangon, has responsible for the maintenance of steam locomotives and the future use of steam does not appear to be under immediate threat as 3 to 4 engines are being overhauled each year. This program will give you an opportunity to view these iron-beasts in their actual action.
Day 01 Arrival, Yangon
Arrive at Yangon International airport, transfer to hotel. Yangon has been the capital of Myanmar since the British transformed it into their administrative centre of future India. Its impressive colonial and spiritual heritage makes Yangon one of the most fascinating capitals of South East Asia. Afternoon ride on Yangon circular train. The circular trains in Yangon are a major lifeline for the urban dwellers and usually crowded with people, goods and animal such as chicken, pig etc. This would be of a great experience for you to observe a real daily life of real Yangon suburbanites. Overnight in Yangon.
Day 02 Yangon – Bago
Breakfast at hotel and visit the world heritage site, Shwedagon Pagoda “rising 326 feet, glittering with gold. The golden dome rises 98 meters above its base and is covered with 60 tons of pure gold along with numeric precious stones such as jade, ruby, sapphire and diamond including a 76 carat solid diamond on its top. After a visit at Insein workshop where all of the steam locomotives get overhauled and many dumped engines survive and depart for Bago (approx two hour). Overnight in Bago
Day 03 Bago – Thaton – Kyaikhto
Chase one of the Asia’s most delightful passenger trains (No 85 up) to Mottama. Again this train usually hauled by diesel loco however we will charter the steam locomotive. Run pass will not be available since this is a combination of chartered loco in schedule passenger train however our expert team will co-operate with personnel from Myanmar Railways to make sure you have most memorable trip having plenty of photo opportunity on the way by mean of slow down the train, pulled up with heavy smoke etc. We chase the train from dawn to dusk, the sun probably goes down by the time we arrive Thaton (passing about 20 stations). Return to Kyaikhto (approx 45 minute) for overnight. Overnight in Kyaikhto.
Day 04 Kyaikhtiyo
To day we visit the famous Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda site, known as Golden Rock. This small 18-foot-high pagoda is built on a gilded boulder 25 meters in circumference balanced in what appears to be a very precarious position on a tabular rock jutting out from the Paung-laung ridge of the Eastern Yoma mountains. Lies 1,100 m above sea-level. We drive to the base camp called Kinponsakan (approx one hour). From here an upper staging point, the journey made in open truck on a recently built road from the base camp to the top of Yathetaung. From here we must walk the final stage (approx 45 minute). As an easier alternative to walking, four porters at an extra cost can carry us in sedan chairs. They provide ample space for hikers to rest, eat, bathe or recline. Observe the local pilgrimage activities of this important pilgrimage site. In the afternoon return Kyaikhto. Overnight in Kyaikhto.
Day 05 Kyaikhto – Bago
We will change the style of steam loco another fashion. Now either a YD or YC will haul a stone cargo train to Bago. With our charter bus we’ll follow the train for photography. Since this will be a complete chartered train exclusively for our group we can have several photo option including a run pass. Overnight in Bago.
Day 06 Bago – Yangon
In the morning board on passenger train (No. 14 down) which normally hauled by diesel loco however in this particular trip we would charter the steam loco to make this steam-hauled exclusively for our group. (Available steam loco will be YB or YC 4-6-2). Will have ample photo opportunity on the way. While in Yangon visit Mahlwagon depot, where our loco will be turned on the turntable in front of a big roundhouse. In the evening transfer to airport for your onwards departure to conclude this unique experience.
