SHWESETTAW WILDLIFE SANCTUARY This sanctuary (552.70 sq km) is located on the western edge of the Myanmar dry zone and is dry deciduous forest.

This Myanmar (Burma) ecotourism, birding and birds watching tours site has Brow-antlered Deer (Myanmar endemic), Sambhur Deer, Hog Deer, Gaur, Serow, Wild Boar and small mammals, over 40 species of butterfly, and Myanmar Star Tortoise (Myanmar endemic), Yellow Tortoise and Indian Black Turtle. These fauna may be viewed in this site.

132 bird species have been recorded in this Myanmar (Burma) ecotourism, birding and birds watching tours site. The highlight would be White-rumped Falcon (Myanmar near-endemic bird species), White-eyed Buzzard, Collared Falconet, Hooded Treepie (Myanmar Endemic bird species), Streak-throated Woodpecker, Asian Paradise-flycatcher, White-throated Babbler (Myanmar Endemic bird species) and Common Rosefinch.

In addition one can visit to historically famous Shwesettaw Pagoda.

Recommend to visit all the year round but the best time for Brow-antlered Deer watching is in middle of March to the end of April.

Detail Itinerary

Day 1: Yangon (Myanmar, formerly Burma) arrival day

Arrive at Yangon (formerly Rangoon) international airport. Transfer and check in the hotel for one night stay. If we have time we will do Yangon City birding where Little Grebe, Bronze-winged and Pheasant-tailed Jacanas, Lesser Whistling Duck, Common Moorhen, Oriental Darter, Little cormorant, Coppersmith Barbet, Mynas, Bee-eaters, Bulbuls, Tailorbird, Prinia and other birds will be seen. Overnight will be at hotel in Yangon.

In the morning, we will drive to Hlawga Wildlife Park to do birding. Here we will be able to see the rare Pale-capped Pigeon, Racket-tailed Treepie, Red Junglefowl, Green, Blue-tailed and Chestnut-headed Bee-eaters, Green-billed Malkoha, Lesser Racket-tailed and Greater Racket-tailed Drongos, White-rumped Shama, Black-headed, Black-crested, Red-vented, Red-whiskered, Stripe-throated with red eyes which is only found in south Myanmar and near-endemic Streak-eared Bulbuls, White-crested and Lesser Necklaced Laughingthrushes, Puff-throated and Chestnut-capped Babblers, Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker, Ruby-cheeked, Olive-backed and Purple Sunbirds, some waterbird species such as Oriental Darter, Spot-billed and Lesser Whistling Ducks, Cotton Pygmy Goose, Common Moorhen, White-breasted Waterhen, Red-wattled Lapwing, Little Ringed Plover and others. We can also see wintering bird species such as Osprey, Black-naped Oriole, Spotted Redshank, Painted Stork, Asian Openbill, Black-naped Oriole, Black-winged Cuckooshrike, Oriental Reed, Greenish and Yellow-browed Warblers and Forest Wagtail. Late afternoon, we will drive to Moeyungyi Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary (two hours drive) . In the evening we will be birding along the shore of Moeyungyi to see Plaintive Cuckoo, Bluethroat, Striated Grassbird, Thick-billed and Oriental Reed Warblers, Asian Golden Weaver, shorebirds and others. Overnight will be at resort in the sanctuary.

Morning boat rides on Moeyongyi Lake to see hundreds of Purple Swanphen, Pheasant-tailed and Bronz-winged Jacanas, Northern Pintail, Lesser Whistling Duck, Oriental Pratincole, Grey Heron, Asian Openbill, Painted Stork, Glossy Ibis, Greater Spotted Eagle, Harriers, Black Kite, Black-browed Reed Warblers and other bird species. After lunch we will drive back to Pyay (6 hours drive) for a two night stay. Birding stops en-route. Overnight will be at hotel in Pyay.

In the early morning, we will be birding the whole day in the dry deciduous forest near Pyay. Here we can see three out of five endemics of Myanmar bird species, which are rare Hooded Treepie, White-throated Babbler and Burmese Bushlark together with Chinese Francolin, Fulvous-breasted, Streak-throated and Grey-headed Woodpeckers, Greater Yellownape, Common, Himalayan and Greater Flamebacks, Red-billed Blue Magpie, Rufous Treepie, White-eyed Buzzard, Burmese Shrike, Asian Paradise Flycatcher and many more speciality birds. Overnight will be at hotel in Pyay.

Morning we will drive from Pyay to Popa Mountain Park for two nights stay. Birding stops en-route. Overnight will be at hotel in Popa.

We will be birding the whole day in Popa. Here we can see Red Junglefowl, Blue-throated Barbet, Green-billed Malkoha, Thick-billed Green, Yellow-footed Green, Wedge-tailed Green and Green Imperial Pigeons, Emerald Dove, Blue-winged Pitta, Red-billed Blue and Black-billed Magpies, Black-hooded Oriole, Grey and Rufous Treepies, White-throated Fantail, Verditer Flycatcher, Daurian Redstart, White-browed Shortwing, Chestnut-flanked and Oriental White-eyes, Lesser Necklaced and Greater Necklaced Laughingthrushes, Puff-throated and Chestnut-capped Babbler, Common Rosefinch, Chestnut Bunting and many other bird species. Overnight will be at hotel in Popa.

In the morning we will drive to Bagan (one hour drive) for a two night stay. We will be birding the whole remainder time in Bagan, Here we can see another one Myanmar’s endemic bird species that is Jerdon’s Minivet (recently split from White-bellied Minivet) together with three Myanmar’s endemics species can be found again which are Hooded Treepie, White-throated Babbler and Burmese Bushlark. And also we can see other special Myanmar birds such as Myanmar near-endemic birds – Vinous-breasted Starling and Plain-backed Sparrow, Chinese Francolin, Yellow-legged Buttonquail, Rain Quail, Burmese Shrike, Spotted Owlet, Indian Nightjar, House Martin, Red Collared and Eurasian Collared Doves, Yellow-eyed Babbler, Brown Prinia and many more. We can also see wintering bird species such as Eurasian Wryneck, Brown Shrike, Red-throated Flycatcher, Siberian Rubythroat, Daurian Redstart and Yellow-streaked Warbler. Overnight will be at hotel in Bagan.

Overnight in Sapa.

In the morning, we will be birding by wooden boat along the Ayeyarwaddy (Irrawaddy) River to see White-tailed Stonechat, Sand Lark, Long-billed Pipit, Spot-billed Duck, River Lapwing, Great Thick-knee, Small Pratincole, Pied Kingfisher, thousands of Plain and Sand Martins, Indian Skimmer, River and Black-bellied Terns, Laggar Falcon and others. We can also see wintering bird species such as Ruddy Shelduck, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Common Teal, Great Cormorant, Grey Heron, Grey Plover, Spotted Redshank, Common Greenshank, Temminck’s Stint, rare Greater Spotted Eagle, Harriers, Common Kestrel and Peregrine Falcon. After lunch we will be birding again or if interest the archeological site will be visit as famous pagodas and temples are located in Bagan. Overnight will be at hotel in Bagan.

In the morning we will drive to Shwe Settaw Wildlife Sanctuary for two nights stay. Birding stops en-route. Overnight will be at forest guest house in Shwesettaw.

We will be birding the whole day in Shwesettaw. Here we can see Myanmar near-endemic bird White-rumped Falcon together with Chinese Francolin, Red Junglefowl, Barred Buttonquail, White-bellied, Streak-throated, Fulvous-breasted and Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpeckers, Alexandrine, Rose-ringed, Grey-headed, Blossom-headed and Red-breasted Parakeets, White-eyed Buzzard again, Collared Falconet, Woolly-necked Stork, Golden-fronted Leafbird, Maroon Oriole, Black-winged Cuckooshrike, Small and Rosy Minivets, White-browed Fantail, Common Wood Shrike, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Black-collared Starling, Pipits and other birds. Overnight will be at forest guest house in Shwesettaw.

In the morning we will drive to Pyay. Birding stops en-route. Overnight will be at hotel in Pyay.

In the morning we will drive back to Yangon. Birding stops en-route. Overnight will be at hotel in Yangon.

City tour or visit to famous Shwedagon Pagoda, the city’s primary Landmark, with its magnificent golden stupa. Transfer to Yangon International Airport for the departure flight at your flight time.
